Stupid shit people say to you while you’re pregnant

Don’t get me wrong, some people are lovely and have lots of positive/encouraging things to say about this new chapter in your life but sadly there is also a flurry of ridiculous and often rude (not necessarily intentional) comments. When you’re pregnant and on the hormone roller coaster anything can push you over the edge so here’s a little help on what NOT to say:

  • “Are you sure it’s not twins?”
  • “You’re carrying low, it must be a boy”
  • “Oh wow, you’re getting big”
  • “Your boobs are huge”
  • “Do you know what you’re having?”
  • “Are you going to have a natural birth?”
  • “Have you got a name yet?”
  • “Sleep while you can”, also up there with “enjoy your freedom” and other comments basically implying that you’re doomed for life
  • “You’re baby is going to be huge/tiny”
  • “You look like you’re going to pop any day now”
  • “Are you planning on breastfeeding?”
  • “Are you allowed to eat that?”
  • “Have you got stretch marks?”
  • “Was it planned?”
  • “You look exhausted”
  • “Can I touch your belly?”

Equally annoying are the shitty comments you don’t need to hear like:

  • “Oh, I never had any morning sickness” and “my pregnancy was such a breeze”
  • “I was ripped open from end to end”
  • “You’ll never sleep again”
  • “Hopefully he/she is a good baby”
  • “You still have X amount of weeks to wait” and “are you over it yet?”

Oh, and once you’ve had the baby, expect some real rippers

  • “Did it hurt?”
  • “Is he/she sleeping through the night yet?”
  • “Ready for another?”
  • And again “Are you breastfeeding”
  • “When are you going back to work?”
  • “Are you sleeping?”
  • “We never see you anymore”
  • “It gets better” (it actually does though)

And we can’t forget the constant “any news?” while you’re waiting for your wee one to arrive.

What is the worst thing somebody said to you while you were pregnant?

Worst comment for me was ‘oh you haven’t dropped yet?’ ….I use to think I’m not a cow or a chicken 😣

“When are you going to dig out the maternity stretchy gear?”

    And

“You really look like shit today”

Both said by colleagues I didn’t really know very well.

I hated the “oh you’re stomach is sooo lititle, is the baby growing ok?” and their shocked respose me when they’d “say oh you must have awhile to go” and I’d tell them I was nearly due!!!
I did have a small bump but that was just my body’s way of carrying. People and their opinions….uuuggghh

Any sentence starting with “you should…” I’m only 13 weeks in and it’s already happening on the daily.

In a shop a girl asked me when I was due( I was 4 months at the time) so said due in May. Her mouth feel open she looked me up and down and very rudely said ” wow, your really big!” In the most judegly tone of voice ever. I snapped! I said ” yeah and I’m fat too so thanks for pointing that out” stupid stupid girl. I already have a complex about how big my belly is 2nd time around

Every time I felt down or in discomfort (and I’m a silent sufferer I only speak up when I’m REALLY in pain) I always got the “just wait until *this* happens or *that* occurs or *this* symptom shows up” etc from other mums. They never simply acknowledge what you’re feeling and needing support with RIGHT NOW. It’s no wonder so many women experience pre and post natal depression and suicide rates are on the rise – it honestly feels like unless you are dead no one truly hears your voice and your struggles.

I was due at the end of July and had two coworkers say “oh you’ll never make it to July with how big you are!”

  10. The most annoying thing I get asked is, “Do you have a name yet?” When I respond with, “Yes, we’ve been calling him by his name for the last few months…” Most respond with, “But what if he doesn’t look like his name?”

It’s not like he’s a dog who will come to us when we call his name.
